Former AC Milan striker Stefano Borgonovo recently announced that he was suffering from motor neurone disease, or MND. The disease is more commonly known in the United States as Lou Gehrig's disease. Still incurable, MND destroys the body's motor nerves and causes paralysis. This is the same disease that astrophysicist Steven Hawking suffers from. Borgonovo unfortunately shares this disease with some of his former Italian stars. In a startling study by an Italian official, it is believed that 41 former Italian soccer players have suffered from the disease since 1973. So what is the link between all of these players? Investigators are currently looking into the pesticides that have been used on Serie A fields. Others believe that it is a genetic predisposition but the odds of that occurring with all of those former athletes would be mind-boggling. It is estimated that Italian soccer players are seven times as likely to get the disease as others.
This is truly a sad story and what a terrible discovery it would be if it is found to have been caused by the pesticides. For more information on this disease and how you can help find a cure, visit The ALS Association.
